Spiral, thermal and hardbound thesis binding in Lahore

Spiral, Thermal, or Hardbound: Choosing Binding for Your Project

Most students search for thesis binding in Lahore a day or two before submission. By then, the choice is simple. Spiral is for drafts and examiner copies. Thermal is for reports and projects. Hard cover is for the final copy after the viva.

Students reach our Harbanspura counter from UET on GT Road, the University of Gujrat campus on Main Canal Bank, and Rahbar Medical and Dental College on Harbanspura Road. Below are our counter rates, the time each type takes, and the written rules of four Lahore universities.

Spiral, thermal and hardbound binding compared by use and time

Spiral binding: drafts and examiner copies

Spiral binding is the cheapest type, and it is ready while you wait. A plastic coil runs through holes punched down the left edge. University notices call it ring binding.

  • Pages open flat, so a supervisor can write on them.
  • A page can come out or go in later.
  • The coil bends in a packed bag.

Pick it for a synopsis, a research proposal, a lab manual, or the copy that goes to examiners before the viva.

One warning. Punched pages cannot be hard bound later. The University of Health Sciences tells students not to punch the margin, because holes make binding impossible. Print fresh pages for the final copy.

Thermal binding: reports and project files

Thermal binding glues the pages into a card cover, so the file looks like a book. A strip of glue on the spine is heated until it grips the paper. Shops also call it soft binding or softcover.

  • The spine is flat, and the front cover can be clear or printed.
  • No holes are punched.
  • Pages do not open fully flat.
  • Nothing can be added once the glue sets.

It suits project report binding, a final-year project, and an internship report. It is ready the same day.

Hardbound: the final copy after your viva

Hard cover binding is for the final thesis or dissertation, and only after the defense. In Urdu, it is pakki jild. The pages sit inside stiff board covered in rexine or cloth. The title is embossed on the cover and spine in gold or silver.

Do not order it early. Punjab University asks for spiral or tape binding first and hard binding after the defense. UMT’s School of Pharmacy asks for ring binding first and hard binding after a successful defense. If examiners ask for changes at the viva, a hard cover cannot be opened to swap pages.

For hardbound thesis binding, bring three things in writing: the cover colour, the title page wording, and the spine text.

UHS adds one more rule. A thesis thicker than 1.75 inches goes into two volumes.

Hard cover thesis colours at PU, UET, UHS and UMT Lahore

Which one your department accepts

Every university sets its own cover colour, and the wrong colour means binding the thesis again. These four publish their rules.

UniversityHard cover colourLettering
Punjab UniversityPhD: maroon or grey. MPhil: green or black. Dark shades for science, light for social sciencesSpine in 18 pt
UET Lahore (MSc, PhD)MSc: black. PhD: royal blue. Matt finishGold
UHS LahorePhD maroon, MPhil olive green, MD navy blue, MS dark gray, MDS blackSpine in 18 pt
UMT School of PharmacyBlueSilver

Punjab University and UHS ask for six copies. UMT’s pharmacy school asks for four, with the signed plagiarism report bound inside.

PU and UHS put the degree at the top of the spine, your name in the middle, and the year at the bottom. UET wants the title, your name, your registration number, and the year.

PU, UET and UHS all use 80 gsm A4 paper. Rules differ by degree and faculty, so check your own department’s notice before you order.

Coursework is simpler. Our assignment printing format guide covers margins, front page, and binding for assignments.

Cost comparison table

All three types cost Rs 60 to Rs 100 per book at our counter. Page count and cover material set the exact figure. The spiral binding price in Lahore starts from Rs 60 per book with us.

So binding is the small part of the bill. The copies are the big part.

Take a 100-page MPhil thesis in black and white with six copies, the number PU and UHS ask for.

ItemPrint all sixPrint one, photocopy five
Printing at Rs 15 per pageRs 9,000Rs 1,500
Photocopy at Rs 9 per pageRs 0Rs 4,500
Binding, six booksRs 360 to Rs 600Rs 360 to Rs 600
TotalRs 9,360 to Rs 9,600Rs 6,360 to Rs 6,600

The second route saves Rs 3,000. Punjab University’s rules allow it. The first copy is the original, and the rest may be made by other copying methods. Ask your supervisor before you choose.

Colour pages are Rs 50 each. Our printing rates page has the full list.

How long each takes

  • Spiral: ready while you wait. A 30 to 40 page file takes 15 to 20 minutes with printing when the counter is free.
  • Thermal: ready the same day.
  • Hard cover: 1 to 2 days, because the cover and spine need time.

Count back from your deadline. For a Monday submission, hand over hard cover work by Saturday. We are open all seven days, 10 AM to 10 PM.
